Kelvin completed his furniture and cabinet making apprenticeship with Russells Furniture in Nelson in the late 1980s – in the days when it produced domestic and light commercial furniture for stores nationwide. After ‘the Big OE’ Kelvin worked for prestigious Alloy Yachts in Auckland producing fine furniture and cabinetry for super yachts. In this role he advanced his knowledge in fine woodworking techniques such as curved cabinetry and technical veneer and timber work to the world-class standard required for multi-million dollar luxury yachts. Kelvin returned to his hometown of Nelson after being head-hunted to project manage a major interior fit-out for another company before going into business on his own in 2005.

Getting every detail pinpointed accurately prior to commencing construction is the approach Kelvin likes to take to his work.

“This helps me build up a good rapport with my clients and to understand exactly what they are looking for. My aim with every job is to ensure that the project is produced to the very finest standard, with no hidden costs. My goal is for every client to want to come back to me for future projects or refer me on to their friends.”

Outside of work, Kelvin is a keen sportsman and has played football at New Zealand representative level, although these days he’s more likely to be found fishing or mountain-biking.

A relationship with landscape shaped an early career as gardener. Whilst the work and the connection with things growing and living were rewarding, Michael’s pockets weren’t so keen and so he took up the offer of UK Government-funded training. Following his tuition as a cabinet maker, he became self-employed in Gloucestershire and later in Yorkshire.

Variously working solo and in partnership, Michael earned a reputation for the quality of his work and insight with customers. A spell with a bespoke kitchen and furniture maker in his then home-town of Hebden Bridge led to him being approached by the prestigious English firm of Martin Moore. Leading a skilled team, Michael helped to set up a new workshop and craft their high-end range of kitchen and fitted furniture.

An English Cotswold upbringing gave Michael great respect for the grand trees of that extraordinary landscape and history. Years on, and now living in the Lud Valley near Nelson, trees of a different land and culture surround him. However it is no less important to Michael to work with the woods available in a sustainable and sensitive manner, to respect another ecology and tradition.

Michael says he is pleased to be working as a contractor to Atkinson’s Innovative Interiors because, "It offers me this extraordinary opportunity to work alongside New Zealand craftspeople and to share our collective vision and expertise. I admire Kelvin’s attention to detail and passion for quality. Working with Atkinson’s Innovative Interiors is a chance to offer customers the excellence and skill that ought to be the hallmark of any work in New Zealand’s very special woods.”
